Happy spring! Warmer temperatures and the sight of tulips and daffodils remind us of days spent in the sun. The increasing daylight brings cheer, and with it the promise of a fresh start. Nothing symbolizes this fresh start more than spring cleaning. Here are 10 spring cleaning tips to leave your home feeling fresh!
Start From the Top and Work Your Way Down
If you plan on doing a deep clean of everything in your home, we’d suggest starting with things that are high up in your home, like ceilings, furnace/HVAC vents, and lighting fixtures. Then, work your way down toward the floor. This way, you won’t forget anything, and dust and dirt won’t fall upon an already clean surface.
Dust Desks, Tables, Bookshelves, and More
With your furnace or heater working overtime all winter, dust circulates around your home. There’s no better time to clean all of your home’s surfaces than in the spring. Remove all items from your shelves and tables, and use a feather duster or wipe to remove dust from the surface. Don’t forget to clean all of your household objects before you return them to the shelf!
Clean Walls and Ceilings
When’s the last time you washed your walls? Dust can cling to the surface of your walls, as can pet hair and grime from cooking. Vacuum your walls to remove dust and pet hair, and use a solvent-free cleaner or dish soap to give your walls a deep clean. We recommend that you test your cleaner on a small area first just to be sure that it isn’t too harsh.
What better way to make your home feel fresh than by letting more sunlight into your home? Windows can quickly become smudged with greasy fingers and covered in dust, both inside and out.
Replace Window Screens
With warmer weather, you’ll probably want to start having your windows open to let fresh air in. Having holes in your window screens will invite bugs into your home. Purchasing a new screen will keep those pesky insects out, and allow the fresh air in.
Wipe Down Handrails
Cleaning the handrails in your home might be overlooked, but for how often they are used they should be cleaned regularly.
Remove Dead Plants and Debris
Now that plants are growing again and flowers are blooming, dead plants and other debris from fall and winter should be removed. This will allow new plants to grow in their place. Still have leaves hanging around from fall? Now’s a great time to rake them up!
Clean Your Fridge
Spring is a great time to clean out your fridge. Look for any items that are expired and toss them out. Be sure to wipe down your shelving and clean the bins to get rid of any spills, stains, or bacteria.
Clean the Floor
While sweeping and vacuuming might be regular activities, when is the last time you really cleaned your floors? Spring is a great time to mop the floors and shampoo the carpets. Carpet shampooers have become relatively inexpensive, especially when considering how long they last.
Change HVAC Filters
Replacing your air filters is a great way to maintain your furnace and/or air conditioning system. Changing filters regularly can prevent a fire and improve your overall health.
